I was born in Southport in 1965 but brought up in Barry, South Wales. Key facts about me: My dad was from Liverpool and brought me and my brothers up to be ardent Liverpool supporters – that’s obviously the most significant fact. I did a law degree and then qualified as a scrivener notary. I’ve been in the same firm of notaries in London for 26 years now – the film Papillon resonates strongly with me. I have been married for over 20 years to Jackie (she’s not a Liverpool supporter and tragically has absolutely no interest in football) and we have three sons to be proud of – Tom, Joe and James. I should also mention that we also have two westies called Ted and Albi – great characters who regularly appear in my paintings.
As for my painting I have kept to the same routine for about 20 years now. Most evenings each week I will paint for at least an hour and just work on something I have observed or just remember from growing up. Over the years I have obviously developed my style but it has always been naïve with a focus on colour harmonisation and fairly simple compositions. It’s an added bonus if I can develop an idea that I find humorous – the title plays a big part then and I enjoy working this out. I have always used acrylic paint. The fact that its so quick drying is a big attraction for me given that I have so little time to actually paint. With regard to my cv, my work has been used for an album cover by the group The Bluetones, a postcard by the RA and also a book cover. I also design greeting cards for a card company which is a good fun.
My goals now in terms of my painting are to try and keep developing and improving. It's always great to sell a work but painting for me is all about relaxation and exploring the endless possibilities it represents.
