“Space and Form, now seen without a view point… Space without time or thought, explainable only to a degree.”
Brian Hayman was a prolific scenic artist for over 40 years. His body of work includes murals, paintings, scenery and sculpture, primarily undertaken for his professional career in the television industry. During his lifetime, he worked at the BBC and Thames Television Studios, among others.
At the age of 17, Hayman was called up for National Service. His one free day a week was devoted to life drawing at the St. Martins School of Art. After leaving the RAF, he attended Ealing Art College, where he expanded his practice into painting, instructed by Frank Auerbach and Peter Coker. From 1960 to 1970, Hayman studied sculpture under Jane Coyle and etching under Brian Perrin at the Chelsea School of Art.
Hayman spent the majority of his life nearby in Twickenham, where he enjoyed swimming, strolling, and ornithology during his later years. Prince & Pilgrim is honoured to present a curated selection of Hayman’s works, much of which were studies used by the artist, experiments in developing abstract, primal forms. His influences include the German sculptors Hans Arp and Max Ernst, as well as Alberto Giacometti.
