Linda Schwab is a British figurative artist known for her softly focused, nostalgic paintings of seemingly familiar scenes.
Her paintings are intimate in scale; built up in layers of thin paint and visible brush marks. Some appear to be executed quickly in order to catch a fleeting moment, albeit that the moment may have been a hundred years ago. Other paintings are worked on over time and have a denser, more velvety surface, as if the figure was submerged within the picture space. The source material for all the works is photographic, comprised of both Schwab's own photographs of place and found imagery of people. The found photo is distanced from its original format / physical reality by the addition of another image of another place and time, producing a sort of double exposure. Using multiple images enables the figures in the paintings to transcend the familiar to sit, or stand, within a metaphysical, dreamlike environment
Schwab graduated with an MA in painting from the Slade School of Art and has exhibited widely in the UK and in Europe. Her work is held in private and public collections.
